Tenganan Village

The Bali Aga, Baliaga or Bali Mula are the original Balinese people, predominantly located in the eastern part of the island, in Karangasem. They can also be found in north-western and central regions. The Bali aga live in isolated areas in the mountains. Tourists wishing to visit certain villages must be careful due to the geography of the area . While visiting, it is also important to be respectful and quietly observe the preserved way of life the Bali aga have . In Tenganan, where tourism is more easily embraced and the people are said to be more friendly, a three-day festival called Udaba Sambah is held during the months of June or July. It is also to be noted that Tenganan prohibits divorce and polygamy, unlike other villages.

Tenganan by its unique Bali Aga culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies and rules of ancient Balinese, and its unique village layout and architecture. It is known for its Gamelan selunding music and geringsing double ikat textiles

Tirtagangga

Tirtagangga (holy water of the Ganges in Balinese) water garden was built in 1948 by the King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. This water garden was constructed in a very unique architecture of Balinese and Chinese styles.

The area of the watergarden is about 3 acres, consisting of three levels of ground stretching from east to west. On the highest northern Swah level there are the spring under the banyan tree, the upper swimming pool and two decorative ponds, one with four fountains reminiscent of Versailles, and the other with Victoria lotuses.

The first thing one sees when entering the garden is the elegant eleven-tiered Nawa Sanga fountain which rises from the middle of the complex. This fountain together with the two ponds form the middle Bwah level.

The larger lowest Bhur level, on the left side of the straight foot path running from the entrance to the west, is occupied by the big South pond with the long Demon island in the middle.

Ujung water Palace

Taman Ujung was built in 1909 as a relaxation and recreation palace by the then King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik. It was largely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Agungin 1963, damaged again by an earthquake in 1979 and has not been restored on the same scale as TirtaGanga. In the beginning, there was only a pond founded here where the pond was very haunted and secret where this pond is named by Di Dirah. The existence of this pond has been there when reign of I Gusti Gde Putu king (1849-1893) together with his brother I Gusti Gde Oka (1849-1890) and the surrounding area of this pond has been used a dumping place for those accused of running the witchcraft (black magic). In the reign of I Gusti Bagus Jelantik who becomes king in 1909, the areal of this pond is expanded and builds some ponds and a magnificent Bale Gili building with European style, hence this site is named by Taman Sukasada Ujung Karangasem. This park is located in the strategically location which is close to the beach and many springs were found.

 

Lempuyang temple

Gate to Haven     It is also one of the six temples that are dedicated to the supreme God, Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. The six are the temples of the world, also called sad kahyangan.         

Pura Luhur Lempuyang is like several other temples in this list one of Bali's most important religious places. Like Besakih, Tanah Lot etc it's also one of the island's nine directional temples with the function to protect Bali and the Balinese from evil spirits.
The temple is never really crowded. So if you are fit and ready for a challenge that gives you a very special reward in return, this temple should be high up on your list of things to do on Bali.

It's a very scenic and very holy place to visit. Located in east Bali within the highlands of Mount Lempuyang this temple is not only one of the most difficult to get to, but also one of the most sacred on Bali. 1,700 steps cut into the mountain are between your parking lot and the shrines. This means a 1 1/2 to 2 hours of physical challenge leading you uphill through the jungle. 

The temple's unique location and spectacular views are definitely a highlight for the fit and willing. The steep and challenging climb with more than 1700 stairs will lead you to the temple almost 1.200m above sea level. The entire area around mount Lempuyang is actually one of the best to hike and enjoy a Bali, that has nothing to do with the south. 

To many, who are into hiking and trekking this visit is a fantastic blend of an adventurous mountain trekking experience, incredible panoramic views, and the visit of an ancient religious site. You will walk through lush mountain forests, pass by several other smaller temples, and will surely meet a few of the grey long-tailed macaques. 

Once you are there you might notice, that Pura Lempuyang is actually smaller than the Penataran Agung. But it feels different, more serene, more calm. It's unique and one can slightly feel why Balinese were ready to put such unbelievable amount of effort into constructing this site with their bare hands.

 

You can shorten the time it will take you to get up there after you got off by your car and hire one of the many many motorcycle taxis that are operated by local villagers. The price is reasonable, simmply ask your driver to help you to negotiate a fair price. They will take you up the the point where the paved road ends directly at the temple Penataran Agung, for a negotiable fee.
And it can be a fun ride too. Most people stop at the first temple and tke a few pictures before they gather their strength and courage to face the 1.700 steps.

White Sandy Beach a.k.a Virgin beach

(Pantai Putih) is set about a 20-minute drive north of Candi Dasa on Bali’s eastern coast. It’s one of those hidden away beaches that gets a mention in most guidebooks but few people ever actually bother getting to because it involves a bit of travelling to reach. This is the only beach on the east coast with white sand. The beach is very good – a wide, with good, a calm sea most of the time and not too many people here.There are rare corals and tropical fish swim in the sea. On the beach there are dozens of cafes where you can refresh yourself – to its customers at no extra charge they provide sunbeds. In close proximity to the beach there is no shelter, but for a beach holiday it fits perfectly.
